Review Anne Ku about ‘Piano Animals’

This 31-page book of four hand piano music is sheer FUN with a capital F. The composer Heleen Verleur knows just what pianists love playing: music that is easy to read, sounds hard to play, but is so much fun that you don’t want to stop until it ends.

Commissioned by the Groninger Piano Festival 2017 where it was premiered, “Piano Animals” is a piece that belongs in every quatre-mains repertoire. It’s programmatic, with images and sounds of animals in their environments. The 452 measures are packed with variety and contrast. The primo and secondo are duetting with each other, interacting in every which way possible, making the experience of playing together truly exhilarating.

Premiere at Groninger Piano Festival

The duet opens with monkeys scrambling about. Both primo and secondo play quarter notes in staccato with accents and grace notes here and there. Anyone who has visited a zoo, gone on safari, or watched monkeys in action will relate to the 68 measures of nonstop activity, except for a few surprises requiring both pianists to stop playing and call “ae, oe” or clap their hands, or stomp their feet in unison.

No sooner do the monkeys leave, the wild pigs march in. They move in one direction looking for food and then turn around to hunt in the other direction. Black key clusters, right hand, left hand mimic the way they move about.

Then it’s whale watch season. The whales waltz in the ocean, whether Pacific or Atlantic, they know they’re being watched in Hawaii between November and May and the north eastern coast of the USA from May to October.

When I received the book in November 2021, I pondered how I would play it. Do I record myself playing one part and then play against the recording? If not, self record, how would I find a pianist who would be willing to collaborate?

How would I find a pianist who could sightread and would sit next to me, not socially distanced, and play together? On Oahu, Camilla and I sat in front of her piano while her husband Mark turned pages and recorded the first and only time we ever played together. I had just met her for the first time that day.

Benefietconcert voor de Oekraïne

Op 15 mei as zal er in Amsterdam een concert voor de Oekraïne worden gehouden door het Amsterdams Piano Kollektief. Er wordt muziek gespeeld van Oost-Europese componisten, alsmede negen Variaties op het Oekraïense thema ‘Plyve Kacha’, een 12 minuten durende compositie van Heleen Verleur (première).
De entreeprijs is 10 euro, maar een extra donatie is welkom.

Het gehele bedrag zal worden geschonken aan giro 555 om de vluchtelingen te helpen.

Het concert zal worden uitgevoerd door een zestal pianisten, op 15 mei van 14.30 tot ± 15.30u, bij: Huis van de Wijk Lydia/Roelof Hartplein 2A/1071 TT Amsterdam.

Vrije Geluiden/VPRO

Vanochtend werd ik geinterviewd door Melchior Huurdeman van de VPRO (Vrije Geluiden, Componistenkamer enz.) over mijn bijdrage aan https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/24preludia Het is voor een podcast die op dit moment bezig is. We hadden een interessant gesprek over hoe het allemaal is begonnen. Met name dat ik een periode “in de stijl van” Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert e.d. heb gecomponeerd, om mij het vak eigen te maken.

Melchior was geïnteresseerd in mijn vroege composities. Ik heb ze weer opgedoken in mijn Itunes bibliotheek, en was best verrast ze na zo’n tijd (2002) terug te horen. In maart 2002 had ik een uitvoering van het grootste gedeelte van mijn werken tot dan toe, in het Bethaniënklooster (zie foto boven) in het hartje van Amsterdam. Ps zo superjammer dat deze prachtige concertplek verloren is gegaan voor concerten! Er zitten nu dure woningen in. Het was een unieke plek.

In november 2002 beviel ik van onze tweeling. Daarna ben ik pas goed op dreef gekomen met componeren, en is het ook een beetje een andere kant op gegaan (van tonaal naar minder tonaal naar weer iets meer tonaal maar niet teveel ;))

Maar goed: door dit interview ging ik weer even luisteren naar de opnames van toen. Wat geweldig om terug te horen. Het enthousiasme was toen al duidelijk te horen. Het is een beetje zoals Mondriaan die eerst echte bomen schilderde, terwijl het daarna blokjes werden. Toch kun je de bomen niet overslaan.

The Turtle Dove

Deze variaties op het bekende thema ‘The Turtle Dove’ schreef ik dit jaar in opdracht van een internationaal ensemble van Suzuki blokfluitdocenten.

Het thema van de ’tortelduif’ is een oud volksliedje, maar hier heb ik een draai aan gegeven door er moderne klanken en kleine grapjes tegenover te zetten.

De bekende Nederlandse blokfluitist Jaap Delver speelt hier alle variaties in zijn eentje (het is een instructiefilmpje).

Dit jaar heb ik nog vele andere blokfluit composities gemaakt, onder meer begeleidingen bij Suzuki sopraanblokfluitboek 1.

Plyve Kacha: a famous Ukrainian Folk Song

“Plyve Kacha” or “Plyve Kacha Po Tysyni” translates literally to “the duckling swims”, but the lyrics are a dialogue between a mother and a son going off to war, according to the BBC’s Irena Taranyuk. She translates two of the most moving lines of the song this way: “My dear mother, what will happen to me if I die in a foreign land?” “Well, my dearest, you will be buried by other people.” Dozens of people were killed by snipers in Maidan on February 18th and 20th, 2014 and were buried and mourned in a mass funeral on February 21st, with this song being used to memorialize their lives.

On February 27 2022 I made an arrangement from a Youtube setting for voice and piano. I arranged it for piano solo intermediate. I also put a translation of a French translation into Dutch. You can freely use it. For yourself, for your students. The more people who will play it, the better. When you don’t play the piano yourself, please pass it on to people who might appreciate it. Podcast serie over 24preludia-project

Bij het 24preludia-project zijn de fuga’s uit het Wohltemperierte Klavier vervangen door nieuw geschreven stukken van hedendaagse vaderlandse componisten. Een podcastserie over eigentijdse pianomuziek, waarin de componisten zelf vertellen over hún eigentijdse antwoord op de prelude. De Fanfare voor solo piano van Louis Andriessen gaat voorop om de komende parade in te luiden. Pianiste Jacqueline voorheen Frederique – is de initiatiefneemster van het project.

Ook ‘Groovy Prelude’ van Heleen Verleur zal aan bod komen (als antwoord op de prelude in gis van J.S.Bach).

Composities voor blokfluit ensemble

Voor een internationaal Suzuki jubileum werd ik door blokfluitist Jaap Delver benaderd om een compositie te schrijven voor blokfluit ensemble (sopranen, alt, tenor, bas). Nadat ik er één had geschreven, kreeg ik de smaak te pakken en inmiddels is dit uitgemond in een stuk of acht stukken (Song from the East, With a Twist, Madley, Strange Birds, The Red Wire, Just What, Contrasts, Song for Six Recorders). Bovendien ben ik inmiddels bezig met ensemble begeleidingen te maken bij Suzuki sopraan blokfluitboek 1. Er is ook een fonds opgericht om mij een passende vergoeding te kunnen geven. Alles bij elkaar een vruchtbare samenwerking met de Suzuki blokfluiten!
